Ozark Trail is a private label company owned by Walmart. The Ozark Trail line includes footwear and camping gear such as tents, canopies, backpacks, and even grills.
The Ozark tent cot competes with the market leader Kamp-Rite’s two offerings: The Kamp-Rite Tri-Fold Dual and Kamp-Rite Compact Tent Cot Double. Apart from this, other key competitors are Tangkula, Outsunny, or Gymax.
If I were to state it in a single line, the Ozark Trail product is the most affordable tent cot in the market and offers good value for the price.
WHAT WE LIKED
- Very competitively priced
- Taller and lighter than most competitors
- Gear loft Included
- Screened tent, perfect for stargazing
- Large Rainfly included
- Six-month warranty
- Competitive Pricing
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED
- A bar down the middle of the cot makes it uncomfortable to sleep in with an air mattress.
- The rainfly has no ventilation. It can be suffocating during the rainy season.
- The cot sags a bit after some usage.
Features & Benefits
The Ozark Trail tent cot dimensions are 97 x 97 x 60 inches, making it taller than its competitors (the Kamp Rite CTC Double measures 85 x 55 x 59 in comparison). So there is a lot of space to sit up in, even for a tall person.
However, the mattress space is smaller (79 x 58 inches), so the larger dimensions don’t translate to sleeping space. The CTC double from Kamp Rite has an 85 x 55-inch mattress space. Even the Kamp Rite Tri-fold double has 84 x 53-inch space for sleeping.
Even though it’s tall, the tent cot is lighter, weighing 40 pounds as compared to the CTC double’s 42 pounds and Trifold Dual’s 51 pounds.
Gear loft Included
The gear loft uses the tall design of the tent cot intelligently by giving you a place to store your gear. The gear loft gives you additional space inside the tent to put in your things, which is not present in other tent cots. There is another space at the bottom of the tent between the cot’s legs to store non-essential items as well.
The tent cot can hold up to 450 pounds (225 pounds on either side). This is higher than most competitors except for Kamp-Rite (Kamp-Rite products can hold up to 500 pounds).
Screened tent, perfect for stargazing
The included rainfly in the tent is removable. Once you remove that, the tent cot becomes a screened cot essentially. If you love spending time with your special someone under the stars, hiking out, or in the back of your pickup, this can be a very romantic way to spend a night.
The mesh screen will protect you from insects while you enjoy sleeping out. There are doors on either side of the tent cot for easy entry and exit.
The Ozark Trail tent cot includes a heavy rainfly to protect you from the elements. Compared to this, other tent cots, including the ones from Tangkula, Outsunny, or Gymax, do not come with a rainfly included. However, the competition products do have an air mattress included in them, while this one does not.
The most important feature of this tent cot is the pricing. At nearly half the rate of its competitor products, this is a good bargain. For the price, the value it provides is often the most appreciated feature of this tent cot.
The product comes with a six-month warranty. Apart from the Kamp-Rite products, which come with a one-year warranty, the rest of its competitors are without warranty.
The rainfly in this tent cot does not just enclose the area above the cot; it goes right down to the bottom of the tent. That is a useful feature to have in cold conditions, where it makes the tent cot snug. Competitor products’ rain flys do not go to the bottom of the tent cot.
Ozark Trail Two-Person Cot Tent Alternatives
The Kamp-Rite Tri-Fold offers some advantages over the Ozark Trail product:
- An innovative three-fold cot can be used both as a tent cot and a lounge chair when not in use.
- The tent’s material is made of 190T Nylon instead of mesh. It has mesh-covered windows and doors for protection against insects.
- Its mattress space is larger.
- Higher weight capacity: it can hold up to 500 pounds, whereas the Ozark Trail can only hold up to 450 pounds (225 pounds on either side of the cot)
The Ozark Trail Two-person tent cot is better in two key aspects:
- More headspace, including a gear loft for extra storage space
The CTC is designed for compact travel. It folds down to a very small size compared to others (12 x 12 x 45 inches) and comes with its own portable, wheeled bag.
Tengkula’s two-person product can be used both on and off the ground. It is a complete camping set, with a mattress and bedding, complete with two pillows, included.
It stands eighteen inches above the ground and is a more stable product due to the additional ground nails provided for support.
To reiterate, one of the most attractive features of the Ozark Trail tent cot is its affordability. If you are looking for a cheap option to stay above ground, this product might fit the bill for you. It’s quite spacious, especially in terms of headspace, and can hold 450 pounds (225 pounds on either side of the cot). It is an excellent product for hiking close by or for camping trips with a car (you’d need something lighter for backpacking trips, like the backpacking tent cots reviewed here). If you have a larger tent and are looking for a smaller cot with a mesh, this is a good option.
That said, this is not a great product to weather the elements in. Without the rainfly, the tent is just the screen, which might be good for stargazing, but doesn’t protect you from the cold.
The rainfly covers the entire tent cot but has no vents. If you are looking to spend the night, it will become very stuffy. Lastly, the cot is spacious but has a bar running down the middle, which many people find uncomfortable.
