Tent Cots are one of the most versatile pieces of camping equipment. Kamp Rite, a home-bred, family-owned startup with its headquarters in Sacramento, CA, created an idea that made a lot of sense.
In 1999, when they introduced their first offering that combined two quintessential pieces of camping equipment - a tent and a cot, they began a revolution that has seen them grow to about $4.5mn in revenues.
They created a product that combined a durable tent and cot combination with a rain fly and no-see-um mesh-covered windows in one small package. It keeps you almost a foot above the ground, keeping you safe from small animals.
This article will focus on the latest in the Kamp Rite line - the collapsible series, but we also have an article highlighting the complete Kamp-Rite tent cot product family in our Best Kamp Rite Tent Cot article.
Should you be interested in considering other brands and types of tent cots too, we have our comprehensive Best Tent Cots guide here. And if you are looking for more specialized tent cot options for backpacking, make sure to take a look at our backpacking tent cot piece.

Air Flow and Access
Easy Set-Up
The time required to set up a camping site with a tent and cot depends largely upon the type and size of the tent you are carrying. However, most tents will take you more time to set up.
The Kamp Rite Tent Cots are so easy to set up that you can do it in a matter of minutes. All you need is to open the folded base, set up the spreader bars (in the Dual, you don't even need to set up the spreaders), and open the tent.
Dimensions
The three versions of the Compact Tent Cot series have the following dimensions:
- Standard: 79″L x 29″W x 57″H
- XL: 84″L x 33″W x 61″H
- Dual: 85″L x 55″W x 59″H
As you can see, the XL is longer than the Standard by about five inches, four inches taller, and four inches wider. It is perfect for big and tall people who need that extra bit of space to lie down or sit up comfortably.
The Dual can hold two people, so it is about twice the Standard's width. It is almost as long as the XL, giving you a lot of space for two people to comfortably sleep without bumping into one another all night.
Capacity
The Standard and XL can hold a single person, with the XL being slightly more spacious with better headroom. The Standard is rated to hold 300 pounds of weight, whereas the XL can carry up to 350 pounds.
The Dual, as the name suggests, is designed to hold two people at a time. It has a solid weight capacity of 500 pounds and a construction that can withstand regular usage from two people.
Heavy Duty Construction
The Standard, XL, and Double are all constructed from a 600D fabric material for the tent. 600D refers to the thickness of the fabric, with the D standing for "Denier", which measures how strong the fabric is.
The cot and cot base are all made from heavy-duty powdered steel frames. Steel frames are slightly heavier than aluminum ones but make up for the weight in strength.
The Standard Model has a weight of about 25 pounds, the XL weighs nearly 28 pounds, and despite a double capacity, the Dual weighs only 42 pounds.
Protection From No-See-Ums and Mosquitoes
No-see-ums are small insects that are nearly invisible to the naked eye. Your tent mesh fabric has to be very fine to protect you from these insects.
All three versions of the Compact Tent Cot series have no-see-um mesh on their doors and zippered windows. This mesh ensures that you can get a good night's rest without having to worry about these small critters, bugs, and mosquitos that may enter your tent at night.
There is a mesh storage pouch underneath the cot in both the Standard and XL when not in use. There is a storage hammock in the Double.
Kamp Rite CTC Alternatives
GYMAX Camping Tent Cot

Gymax Tent Cot comes in both varieties: one-person and two-person. While this tent cot is slightly wider and taller than the CTC Dual, it is a great alternative because it has a built-in air mattress and sleeping bag included. The cot itself is twenty inches above the ground. The tent uses durable polyester fabric.
Tangkula Tent Cot

Tangkula offers another great option to Kamp Rite, with a mattress, sleeping bag, and inflatable pillow included along with the tent cot.
Conclusion
The Kamp Rite CTC range provides campers a great option to reduce their camping equipment and set up time. It keeps you safe, warm, and almost a foot above the ground to protect you from small animals and rocks.
With three versions of the product to suit your capacity needs, Kamp Rite offers a perfect compact product that will suit every camper looking to travel light.
