Camping can be inexpensive and great fun if you invest in the right gear. From days hiking through scenic terrain to nights spent stargazing and telling stories around the campfire, camping is a perfect getaway. As with any hobby, there are always little things you wish you could improve. One thing that many campers would like to have is a place to sleep above the ground. Unfortunately, space inside a tent is limited.

Narrow camping cots are one way to circumvent this problem. In this article, we delve into 6 such cots in detail and also provide a handy buyer’s guide and answers to some FAQs.

6 Best Narrow Camping Cots Reviewed

Coleman Converta Folding Cot: Best Multipurpose Cot

TITLE_Coleman Folding Cot

This is a no-frills, durable three-in-one bed, lounger, and chair at a reasonable price.

WHAT WE LIKED
  • Only 25.2 inch wide, this cot fits easily in most tents
  • It is a bed, lounger, and chair rolled into one.
  • It can accommodate people above 6’6″ tall.
  • Rust-resistant, powder-coated steel frame.
  • 13-inch high frame with space underneath for your gear.
  • Folds to a tiny size.
  • Mildew and moisture-resistant.
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED
  • No headrest/side trays/other premium features.
  • Seams are weak
  • No supporting legs at cot’s head if someone sits there.
  • Metal parts are exposed at the joints

Details

  • Multipurpose: It’s a bed, lounger, and chair all rolled into one because of its trifold design.
  • Portability: The cot folds in three parts (head, middle, feet), so it takes up less space in your car (27.8″ L x 25.2″ W x 4.9″ H). It is heavier than other cots in this article but not too heavy to carry by hand, as it weighs 15 lb.
  • Suitable for tall people: The cot is large enough to accommodate a tall person below the height of 6’6″ (Dimensions: 76.3″ x 25.2″ x 12.8″). It is the longest cot in this article.
  • Durable: The powder-coated steel frame is rust and corrosion-resistant. The polyester fabric is elastic and moisture resistant. However, beware – some users have mentioned that the seams are weak.
  • Tall design: The cot is 13 inches tall, which is great to protect you from critters and bugs and gives you space underneath to keep your gear.

KingCamp Folding Cot: Most Portable Cot

TITLE_KingCamp Folding Camping Tent Cot

At just 4.9 lb and measuring 14 x 5.1 x 5.1, this is easily the most portable camping cot with a weight capacity of 250 lb and above.

WHAT WE LIKED
  • Only 25 inches wide
  • Lightweight
  • Folds to a very small size.
  • Highest weight capacity in this list
  • Comes with a carry bag (also usable as a pillow)
  • The cot fabric is removable and washable.
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED
  • You cannot camp on uneven ground. The legs may break.
  • No space underneath (only 4.7 inches tall)
  • Not comfortable for people with arthritis or joint pains
  • Takes 3 – 5 minute assembly time.

Details

  • Portability: At 14″ × 5.1 ” × 5.1 ” and only 4.9 lb, it can easily be folded and carried anywhere. You can even carry it in a backpack.
  • Durable: The cot fabric is 420D ripstop polyester, which is strong enough to hold 265 lb. The legs are made from anti-rust aluminum alloy, which is why the cot is so light.
  • Washable: You can remove the cot from its frame and wash the fabric
  • Elastic bands: There are elastic bands to hold a mattress in place at the top and bottom of the cot if needed.

Portal Adjustable Cot: Best For Tall People

TITLE_PORTAL Adjustable Folding Bed Cot

This has a similar design and specifications as the Coleman product, but it is taller and less bulky. This is both a boon (because the tall design gives space underneath) and bane (because the longer legs cause the bed to become thicker when folded).

WHAT WE LIKED
  • Multipurpose: Recliner, bed, and lounger.
  • Just 25.25 inches wide, fits in any tent easily
  • Firm but breathable fabric.
  • Tall design – easy to get in and out.
  • Lots of space underneath.
  • Can accommodate people up to 6’6″ tall.
  • Includes an adjustable pillow.
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED
  • Steel legs (even painted ones) rust over time.
  • No carrying strap to keep it folded
  • No carry handle.
  • No legs underneath the head to support you if you sit that side.

Details

  • Good for tall people: Due to its length (76.25 inches), this cot can accommodate people of 6’6″ height easily.
  • Portability: The cot can be folded to one-third of its size, making it easy to store and carry. At 13.7 lb, it is lighter than the Coleman product.
  • Height from floor: When unfolded, the cot sits 15.75 inches above the ground, protecting you from insects and small animals. It adds a lot of space for you to store your gear and makes it easy to get in and out of.
  • Durable: The bed frame is made from aluminum, and the legs are painted steel. It does not rust easily.
  • Pillow included: There is a removable and adjustable pillow included with the cot.

HQ Issue Camping Cot: Best Value-For-Money Cot

TITLE_VIVO Green Camping Cot

This is our tallest cot. It’s perfect for older people who find it difficult to bend to get in and out of bed.

WHAT WE LIKED
  • Extra-tall design.
  • Strong material – 600D polyester.
  • Waterproof. Resistant to dirt and mildew.
  • It comes with a zippered carry bag.
  • Easy to unfold and fold back up.
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED
  • X-shaped leg design may not lock firmly and needs a lot of work to setup
  • Heaviest cot in our list.

Details

  • Ease of use: The cot takes very little time to fold or unfold, and there is a zippered bag available as well, which makes it easy to carry to and from your car. Beware, however, it takes a bit of practice to get the legs to lock in place.
  • Tall: This is the tallest cot in our lineup. At 16.4 inches, there is lots of space underneath, and it’s great for older adults.
  • Durable: 600D fabric (both polyester and nylon) is considered very durable for cots. PVC coating on the fabric makes the cot fabric waterproof and resistant to dirt and mildew. The frame is made from powder-coated steel, which is also very durable.

Yahill Ultralight: Smallest and Lightest

TITLE_YAHILL Ultralight Folding Camping Cot

This is the smallest, narrowest and one of the lightest cots in our lineup.

WHAT WE LIKED
  • Super-narrow (22 inches).
  • Lightweight and strong 7001 aluminum alloy pipes.
  • Comes with extra aluminum tubes for heavier sleepers.
  • Waterproof PV coating on fabric.
  • Folds small too
  • Comes with a carry bag.
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED
  • No space underneath for keeping your camping gear.
  • It takes time to set up.
  • Length is less; it cannot accommodate a tall person.

Details

  • Portability: The cot weighs just 3 lb, folds to a very small size (16 x 4.7 inches), and comes with its carry bag.
  • Narrow: The cot measures 70.8″ x 22.8″ x 3.9″. At just 23 inches, it is the narrowest cot in this lineup.
  • Material: The 7001 anodized aluminum alloy has a high yield strength. The alloy is resistant to corrosion, making it apt to be used outdoors. There are extra holes that will accommodate more tubes which will give the cot strength to support heavy people.
  • Fabric: The nylon material of the upholstery is wear-resistant. It has a PV coating which makes it waterproof.

EVER ADVANCED Camping Cot: Most Durable Cot

TITLE_EVER ADVANCED Folding Camping Cot

  • Fabric is removable and washable.
  • Folds-unfolds easily.
  • Carry bag with handle for portability.
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED
  • Assembly time is high.

Narrow Cots Buyer’s Guide

Portability

Keep the folded dimensions and weight in mind when buying. Depending on whether you will be traveling by car or are backpacking, you have to choose a size that you can conveniently carry. For example, you can carry the Yahill cot when backpacking, but you will probably need a vehicle for traveling for the Coleman or Portal cots. It is important to have a carry bag with handles as well.

Dimensions

Since we are talking about narrow camping cots, ideally, an adult-sized person should not look for a more narrow cot than 25 inches. If you are petite, you might fit in a narrower cot, but I would not advise it. Also, take note of your height – for those taller than 6′, you need a longer cot. And if you’re quite heavy you may need to look into one of these double-size cots

Frame

Steel and aluminum are both good frame materials. Steel is stronger, but you should buy products where the steel parts are painted over or powder coated. It will also need maintenance from time to time. Aluminum is not as strong, but it is very light and typically more flexible.

Cot Fabric

Polyester and nylon are good fabrics for cots. Nylon is more stretchable and stronger, but it also tends to fade in sunlight.

Polyester has better colorfastness. It is anti-UV radiation and does not easily change shape and stretch out. It also resists pilling.

Fabric Strength

The most common measure of fabric strength is Denier, which tells you how thick the fiber threads are. Typically, 600D is considered a very strong fabric for cots.

Insulation

Cots have space underneath them, allowing for cool air to move under them in the winter, making you cold. Look for thicker fabric or cots with a mattress built-in to insulate yourself.

Folding Design

Cots come in several varieties:

  1. Multi-fold (bed and recliner): These normally have U-shaped legs underneath, making them more stable. A good example is the Coleman airbed folding cot.
  2. X-shaped legs: This is the most typical design. The X-shape can hold weight better than other designs. However, the legs may have sharp ends, so you should arrange them carefully to protect the bottom of your tent.
  3. Low-height metal supports: These come in many varieties, but they are not like legs. These supports elevate the cot just enough to keep you above ground, but since you are sleeping so close to the ground, they don’t give you a bed-like feeling. The Yahill ultralight cot is an example of this type.

Best Narrow Camping Cot FAQs

Which is the Best Narrow Camping Cot?

Each of the cots is useful for certain types of campers. While the Coleman and Portal cots are multipurpose, the KingCamp and Yahill products are great if you are low on space and need a handy cot.

PORTAL Folding Portable Camping Cot

Are cots more comfortable than an air mattresses?

Air mattresses can be more comfortable than cots, but they require an external source to inflate, sometimes lose air, and you have to sleep next to the ground, which has other problems – you are prone to bugs crawling up, and it’s difficult to bend down to lay on them.

In contrast, cots are easy to carry and set up. They give you extra space underneath, are easier to lay on, and provide a more bed-like feeling. In addition, they keep you protected from bugs and other animals.

For a more detailed comparison, see our cot vs air mattress guide.

What is the ideal size for camping cots?

Ideal size depends on many factors:

  1. How tall and wide are you?
  2. How much space do you have in your tent?
  3. How much space do you have to transport the cot?

For an average American male (who is 5’9″ tall and has a waist circumference of 40.5 inches), you need a cot that is at least 70 inches X 22 inches.
